Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, or SMTP in short is a protocol which sets the guidelines in the sending of email online. It’s the protocol that is employed by the majority of email programs to send emails via the external email server.
However, If SMTP only focuses on the sending of emails What happens when you get the mail that comes in?
This is the point at which POP and IMAP are in.
What are POP and IMAP?
POP along with IMAP are also utilized for the transfer of emails on the internet. But unlike SMTP the protocols mentioned above can be used to take inincoming mail.
Here’s a quick overview of these procedures:
1. POP3
POP3 is it being the 3rd edition of the Post Office Protocol or POP. It is widely accepted across the majority of devices as well as the application that you use to send mail.
The POP service downloads every email that comes in to your device and saves the emails locally. This allows you to access your email offline too — you don’t have to go online to check your mail.
2. IMAP
IMAP is an acronym as Internet Message Access Protocol.
Similar to POP IMAP, it is utilized to sending emails. But there are a few significant differentiators.
In contrast to POP and POP3, unlike POP, an IMAP email account saves all of your emails on the mail server , rather than downloading them to your device. This allows users to access their mail wherever, so long as you’re connected to an Internet connection.
Because IMAP functions as cloud storage for your mail server that receives messages and is much more efficient and quicker than POP3.
