What Should You Know About Vitamin D And Covid-19?

Since its origin in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, more than 2 years of Covid-19 pandemic have passed. However, there is no assurance on when the pandemic will be endemic. As per the latest update of the World Health Organisation for the last week, around 70 000 people are dying each week across the globe and there is a high possibility of the emergence of highly infected new variants of Covid-19. One study conducted on more than 3 000 people in African countries stated that people with low Vitamin D levels had a 7.2% higher chance of having a positive Covid-19 test result. 

Dr David Meltzer, the chief hospital medicine of the University of Chicago Medicine, states that vitamin D is vital for the functionality of a human’s immune system. Further, he says vitamin D supplements have indicated their efficacy in lowering the risk of respiratory infections caused by viruses.  

Dr Len Horovitz, a pulmonologist at Lenox Hill Hospital, says that vitamin D is essential for an improved immune system. And an enhanced immune system means there is a lower risk of having viral infection and the odds associated with Covid-19 are not severe if people get infected.

Another study, named Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews, finds no link between vitamin D and Covid-19 infection. 

Scientists across the globe have their own views on Covid-19 infection and Vitamin D deficiencies. However, many of them hint that you (common people) should take vitamin D supplements to boost your immunity. And a healthy immune system keeps you protected from viral infections. 

Vitamin D and Its Association with Other Health Conditions 

It is easy and inexpensive to get enough vitamin D, as it comes directly from the sun. Enough vitamin D helps your body to make healthy bones and keep your bones strong. Any deficiency or decrease in its level may lead you to make other health conditions worse. The problems that can get worsen are as follows:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Issues and infections with your immune system
  • Certain cancer types such as prostate, colon, and breast cancers
  • High blood pressure
  • Pneumonia
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Blood clots   

A few studies have linked an association of vitamin D deficiency with diabetes and obesity. And these two health conditions have a direct link with a higher death ratio with Covid-19 infection.

Each health condition shows some signs as it starts developing or has grown in your body. Similarly, vitamin D deficiency has some visible symptoms that are as follows:

  • Poor appetite
  • Nausea
  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Confusion
  • Weakness
  • Ataxia

What Should You Take to Treat Vitamin D Deficiency? 

It is known to all that the sun in our solar system is the primary source of vitamin D. You should be in the sun for at least 15-20 minutes a day. During winters, you can extend the time of your sun exposure. Further, you should eat foods rich in vitamin D. These foods can be:

  • Red meat
  • Egg yolks 
  • Oily fish such as sardines and salmon
  • And supplements with vitamin D

Scientists differ on views on vitamin D deficiency and Covid-19 infection. Some state a link while some of them state there is no link between Covid-19 and vitamin D.
